What is a QR Code and How Do They Work?

You've seen them everywhere — on restaurant menus, business cards, product packaging, billboards, and even tombstones. QR codes have become so common that most people scan them without thinking. But what exactly is a QR code, how does it store information, and why has this 30-year-old technology become so popular?

What Does QR Code Stand For?

QR stands for Quick Response. The name reflects the original design goal: codes that could be read quickly by industrial scanners. The technology was invented in 1994 by Masahiro Hara, an engineer at Denso Wave (a Toyota subsidiary), to track automotive parts through the manufacturing process.

How Do QR Codes Work?

A QR code is a two-dimensional barcode. Unlike traditional barcodes which store data in one dimension (horizontally), QR codes store data in two dimensions — both horizontally and vertically. A standard barcode can hold about 20 characters. A QR code can hold up to 7,089 numeric characters or 4,296 alphanumeric characters — enough to encode a full paragraph of text, a WiFi password, a contact card, or a URL.

Error Correction — Why Damaged QR Codes Still Work

QR codes use Reed-Solomon coding for error correction. They can be read correctly even if up to 30% of the code is damaged. Four levels: Level L (7% recovery), Level M (15%), Level Q (25%), Level H (30% — maximum resilience). Higher error correction means denser codes but more damage resistance.

QR codes existed for over 15 years before becoming mainstream in Western countries. The tipping point was 2020: the COVID-19 pandemic made contactless interactions essential. By 2023, an estimated 89 million US consumers had scanned a QR code. Every modern smartphone can scan QR codes natively through the camera app.

Because you can't see where a QR code leads until you scan it, attackers can place fake codes over real ones, encode links to phishing sites, or direct users to malicious app downloads. Tips: check the URL after scanning before tapping open, don't scan codes from unknown sources, don't enter passwords on sites reached via QR codes.
